Description

STPP is the common abbreviation for Sodium Tripolyphosphate, an inorganic chemical compound  It is a white, granular, or crystalline powder that is highly soluble in water and is widely used as a “builder” in detergents and for various functions in the food industry.

Chemical properties

Property Description
Chemical Name Sodium Tripolyphosphate
Chemical Formula Na₅P₃O₁₀
Molar Mass 367.86 g/mol
Appearance White crystalline powder
Density 2.52 g/cm³
Melting Point 622 °C
Solubility in Water 14.5–20 g/100 mL at 25 °C
pH (1% solution) 9.0–10.3
Odor Odorless
Hygroscopic Yes (absorbs moisture from air)

Uses

Detergent Builder: This is the largest use of STPP. It acts as a water softener by binding to metal ions like calcium and magnesium, which prevents them from deactivating the detergent. This allows the cleaning agents to work more effectively.

Food Additive: Food-grade STPP (E451) is used as a preservative, moisture retainer, and emulsifier. It helps improve the texture of processed meats and seafood and prevents them from drying out.

pH Buffer: STPP helps maintain a stable alkaline pH in cleaning solutions, which is crucial for efficient cleaning.

Water Softener/Sequestering Agent: This is its most crucial role. STPP sequesters (binds tightly to) hard water minerals, specifically calcium .

Water Treatment: It is used to prevent the formation of scale (mineral buildup) and corrosion in pipes, boilers, and cooling systems by sequestering mineral ions.
