Description

Sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) is a polyphosphate with the formula (NaPO3)6. It’s a glassy, white solid that’s soluble in water. SHMP isn’t a single compound, but a mixture of polyphosphates where hexamer is the most prominent component. It’s widely used in various industries.

Common Grades of  SHMP

Food Grade SHMP

This is the higher-purity grade, specifically manufactured for use in food and beverage products. It must meet stringent safety and quality standards to be deemed safe for human consumption.Food Additive: Used as a quality improver, emulsifier, texturizer, and sequestrant. It’s found in canned foods, dairy products, beverages, processed meats, and frozen desserts.

Preservative: It helps extend the shelf life of food by chelating metal ions that can cause spoilage.

Technical Grade (or Industrial Grade) SHMP

This grade is produced for industrial applications where the high purity required for food products is not necessary. It is still a high-quality product but has less strict limits on impurities.

Applications:

Water Treatment: Used as a highly effective water softener to prevent scale and corrosion in boilers, pipes, and cooling systems.

Detergents: A key ingredient in powdered detergents and soaps, as it helps soften water and improves cleaning efficiency.

Ceramics: Acts as a dispersing agent (deflocculant) to improve the workability and fluidity of clay slurries.

Oil & Gas: Used to control the viscosity of drilling muds and prevent rust on drilling pipes.

Other Industries: Found in textile dyeing, paper manufacturing, and metal surface treatments.

Uses

Food Industry: It serves as a food additive, thickener, emulsifier, and preservative. For example, it helps to keep processed meat moist, prevents scale buildup in beverage processing, and improves the texture of some dairy products.

Water Treatment: SHMP is used as a water softener to prevent scale and corrosion in pipes and industrial equipment. It sequesters calcium and magnesium ions, which are the main culprits behind hard water.

Detergents and Cleaning: It’s an ingredient in many detergents and cleaning agents where it helps to soften water, allowing the surfactants to work more effectively.

Ceramics and Clays: In the ceramics industry, it’s used as a deflocculant to improve the workability of clay slurries.

Oil and Gas: SHMP is used in drilling muds to control viscosity and act as a dispersing agent for clay and shale particles.
