Uses

In Cooking: It’s a primary ingredient in baking soda and baking powder as a leavening agent.

As an Antacid: It’s an effective antacid that neutralizes excess stomach acid, providing relief from heartburn and indigestion.

In Cleaning and Deodorizing: Its mild abrasive and deodorizing properties make it useful for cleaning surfaces, absorbing odors in refrigerators, and as a component in homemade cleaning solutions.

Personal Care: It’s often used in toothpaste to help whiten teeth and freshen breath, and in bath bombs due to its effervescent reaction with citric acid.

Fire Extinguishers: Sodium bicarbonate is used in some dry-chemical fire extinguishers. When heated, it releases CO2 gas, which displaces oxygen and helps to smother the fire.

Grades

1. Food Grade: This is the most common grade and what is typically sold in grocery stores as baking soda. It is highly pure and manufactured under strict guidelines to be safe for human consumption.Food grade sodium bicarbonate also comes in different particle sizes, such as No. 1 (finer particles, good for baking) and No. 5 (coarser particles, suitable for abrasive cleaning). It can be used for:

Baking: As a leavening agent , pH control: Used in food processing to adjust acidity.

Cleaning: Can be used for household cleaning and deodorizing, especially in kitchens, as it is non-toxic.

2.Pharmaceutical Grade

This is the highest-purity grade of sodium bicarbonate, meeting the stringent standards of organizations like the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and the National Formulary (NF). It is essentially food-grade with an even higher level of purity (often exceeding 99.9%) and undergoes extensive quality control and batch testing to ensure it’s safe for medical use. Its applications include:

Antacids: As an active ingredient in over-the-counter antacid tablets and effervescent powders to neutralize stomach acid.

Medical treatments: Used in intravenous (IV) solutions to treat conditions like metabolic acidosis, which is an excess of acid in the body’s fluids.

3. Technical (Industrial) Grade

This grade is a cost-effective option for non-food and non-medical applications. While it is still mostly pure sodium bicarbonate, it may contain a higher level of trace impurities that make it unsuitable for human consumption. Technical grade is used in a variety of industrial processes, such as:

Flue gas treatment: Used to remove pollutants from industrial emissions.

Cleaning and blasting: Abrasive properties make it effective for cleaning and paint stripping.

Water treatment: Used to adjust the pH in water treatment facilities and swimming pools.

Fire extinguishers: Found in some dry-chemical extinguishers to smother fires by releasing carbon dioxide (CO2) gas.
